In a tragic incident that shocked the residents of Ipara town, Remo-North Local Government Area, Ogun State, a 32-year-old man, identified as David Shodola and suspected to be mentally ill, allegedly beheaded an 84-year-old resident, Alfred Opadipe, on Friday.
The distressing event unfolded when the ‘madman’ resisted arrest, causing the police to take drastic action and gun him down in an attempt to neutralize the threat he posed.
A chilling video, lasting nine minutes and eight seconds, surfaced online, showing the lifeless body of the elderly victim lying on the ground with his head lying a few meters away. Shocked residents gathered at the scene, witnessing the gruesome aftermath of the attack.
According to an eyewitness featured in the video, the elderly victim fell victim to the assailant’s actions.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omotola Odutola, confirmed the tragic incident in a brief statement released in Abeokuta on Friday. She mentioned that the police received a distress call about the incident, leading to the deployment of policemen, led by the Isara Divisional Police Officer, CSP Bankole Eluyeru.
Despite the attempts to arrest the suspect, he viciously attacked the DPO and his team with a machete, prompting the police to take necessary action to neutralize the imminent danger. The ‘madman’ was subsequently shot dead, and the weapon used in the attack was recovered from him.
Although the police have not received any intelligence suggesting the assailant’s mental illness, the incident has left the community in shock and mourning, as they grapple with the brutal act of violence that claimed the life of an elderly resident.
Investigations into the tragic event are likely to continue as authorities aim to shed light on the circumstances that led to this horrifying incident.
