Manchester City legend David Silva has officially announced his retirement football after sustaining a serious ACL injury on July 21. The 37-year-old Spanish midfielder was currently playing for LaLiga side Real Sociedad but has decided to bid farewell to his illustrious career ahead of the 2023-24 season.
During his impressive football journey, Silva achieved incredible milestones, including winning four Premier League titles with Manchester City and representing the Spain national team in 125 international matches.
In a heartfelt video statement shared on social media, Silva expressed his emotions, saying, “Today is a sad day for me. Today it is time to say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to. Today it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues, who are like family to me. I will miss you very much.”
The football icon went on to extend his gratitude to the clubs that played a significant role in his career, including Valencia, Eibar, Celta Vigo, Manchester City, and Real Sociedad. He acknowledged their support and how they made him feel at home throughout his football journey.
Silva’s remarkable decade-long journey with Manchester City saw him play 436 games, score 77 goals, and earn a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year on three occasions. During his time with the club, he contributed to thirteen career trophies, including five Carabao Cups and two FA Cups.
His achievements extended beyond the club level, as he played a pivotal role in Spain’s triumph in the 2010 World Cup and back-to-back European Championships.
In 2020, Silva made a move to Real Sociedad, where he continued to showcase his incredible talents, registering five assists in LaLiga action and helping his team secure a fourth-place finish last season, earning a spot in the prestigious Champions League.
