In Kwara, an Area Court at Center-Igboro, Ilorin, dissolved the marriage between Majeed Suleiman and Ganiyat Suleiman on Friday due to his wife’s prolonged adultery.
Presiding Judge AbdulKadir Ahmed carefully considered the testimonies of both parties and observed the frustration in the petitioner’s attitude while the respondent displayed a nonchalant approach.
Judge Ahmed emphasized that divorce should not be rushed, but in a situation where the petitioner demonstrated an inability to tolerate his partner any longer, the court had to consider the dissolution of the marriage.
As a result, the judge officially dissolved the marriage between the petitioner and the respondent. He ordered that the respondent observe her three-month Iddah period in her matrimonial home and that a divorce certificate should not be issued to her until she completed all the necessary steps in the divorce process. The petitioner was also directed to continue fulfilling his responsibilities toward her.
During the proceedings, the petitioner explained that his wife had been involved in an extramarital affair for over seven years, and he could no longer tolerate her actions.
He stated, “I am only in court because I don’t want to take the law into my own hands or resort to violent measures. I cannot endure my wife’s extramarital affairs any longer, especially considering the age of our children: 9, 12, and 15 years old.”
