Juan Mata’s contract at Manchester United expires at the end of the month, and the club has announced that he will leave.
Mata joined United from Chelsea in January 2014, and he had a good start to his career, helping his team win the FA Cup and the Europa League in his first few seasons.
The veteran Spaniard has been reduced to a bit-part role in recent years, but he remains a popular character among fans. Although further silverware eluded United in the subsequent five campaigns, Mata continued to enjoy his football when called upon.
The 34-year-old made 285 appearances for United, scoring 51 goals. His final outing for the Red Devils was in a disappointing final-day loss to Crystal Palace.
Mata is now the latest player whose departure from Old Trafford has been confirmed recently, joining Frenchman Paul Pogba and English player Jesse Lingard to continue their professional football careers elsewhere as Erik Ten Hag’s team at United takes shape.
