Manchester United legend, Alex Ferguson loses wife

Lady Cathy Ferguson, the wife of the iconic Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has passed away. The Ferguson family confirmed the demise of the 84-year-old in a statement to the PA news agency on Friday afternoon.

Sir Alex and Lady Cathy first met in 1964 when he was 23 years old, and they tied the knot in 1966. They were blessed with three sons: Mark, born in 1968, and twin boys Darren (Peterborough manager) and Jason, born in 1972.

United issued a statement on Friday which read: “Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”

Ferguson retired in 2013 after the death of Lady Cathy’s sister, Bridget. He said at the time: “My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.”

Previously, Lady Cathy successfully convinced him to reconsider retirement in 2002.

During his tenure at Manchester United, Ferguson achieved remarkable success, securing 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, two UEFA Champions League titles, one European Cup Winners’ Cup (now defunct), one Intercontinental Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup.

In addition to his triumphs at Manchester United, he secured Scottish league victories with St Mirren in 1976/77 and Aberdeen in 1979–80, 1983–84, and 1984–85.

A significant milestone came in 1983 when he guided Aberdeen to a historic 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final.
