Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is poised to depart from Old Trafford through mutual consensus, following an internal investigation into his conduct spanning six months.
In the previous week, United had indicated that they were nearing a decision regarding the player’s future. Subsequently, both the Premier League club and the 21-year-old have issued statements explaining the rationale behind his departure from Old Trafford.
Back in February, the Crown Prosecution Service revealed the dropping of charges of attempted rape and assault that were brought against the striker in October 2022. Similarly, a charge of controlling and coercive behavior was also withdrawn.
Greenwood, who steadfastly denied all the allegations, has not featured for the team since his arrest in January 2022, a consequence of graphic videos and images surfacing on social media.
In Manchester United’s statement regarding Mason Greenwood, they conveyed:
“Manchester United has concluded its internal inquiry into the allegations against Mason Greenwood. Our process began in February 2023, subsequent to the dismissal of all charges against Mason.
“Throughout this process, we have strived to consider the perspective and rights of the alleged victim, aligning with the club’s values and standards. We have diligently gathered information and context, including non-public evidence, from individuals with direct knowledge of the situation.
“Based on the available evidence, we have determined that the online content did not provide a comprehensive overview, and Mason did not engage in the offenses for which he was initially charged. However, as Mason has publicly acknowledged today, he acknowledges his errors and is taking accountability.
“All parties involved, including Mason, acknowledge the complexities of resuming his career at Manchester United. Consequently, it has been mutually agreed that a departure from Old Trafford would be the most suitable course of action. We are committed to collaborating with Mason to facilitate this transition.”
