Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has expressed shock over the assassination of Justice Margaret Igbetar, a former President of the Customary Court of Appeal, as-yet-unidentified assailants.
Justice Igbetar, who had dedicated her life to serving the state in various capacities, working tirelessly to safeguard the rights and freedoms of all citizens, particularly the vulnerable members of society, was found lifeless by her son on Thursday.
Alia in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, on Saturday, said her sudden and tragic demise has left a void that will be deeply felt in the legal and social fabric of Benue State.
Governor Alia, visibly affected by the news, questioned the motivations behind such a senseless act of violence. He issued a directive to the state’s security agencies to promptly launch a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. The governor’s call for swift action reflects the urgency to restore a sense of security to the community.
Fr Alia, who noted that the incident remains a shock to him, directed security agencies in the state to immediately swing into action and ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to book.
Praying for the repose of her soul, he stated that Justice Igbetar’s murder is indeed a great loss to her family, the judicial system, the state, and humanity at large.
