NOT less than eight persons were yesterday killed in Zaki-biam, Ukum local council area of Benue State by unidentified gunmen.
An eyewitness in the area, who pleaded anonymity, told The Guardian that the gunmen riding on a motorcycle stormed a supermarket in the area and opened fire on innocent people, killing eight people in the process and injuring several others.
The informant said as a result, serious panic and fear has gripped the residents with many fleeing the area even as most shops and food vendors have shut down their business premises.
“There is tension in the area. People are scampering for safety. Families have fled for fear of being killed. Social and economic activities have declined drastically,” the source maintained.
Confirming the incident, however, the Benue State Police Command Public Relations’ Officer, ASP Austin Ezeani said only two persons were killed while three others are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
Ezeani, who regretted that the killings have spread from Katsina-Ala to Ukum Council, advised those with arms to heed the State government amnesty programme and surrender arms or face the wrath of the law.
