Massive turnout as Lagos discounted food markets commence sales

The commencement of sales at Lagos’ food market, “Ounje Eko,” offering discounted prices on essential food items across the state, has been initiated, as reported by The Nation. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed that food products at these markets be sold at reduced rates in all five divisions of Lagos, starting from Sunday, March 17.

Following the Lagos state government’s announcement on February 22 of various interventions to alleviate economic challenges faced by residents, staple food items such as rice, beans, garri, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper are now available at a 25% discount.

Our correspondent noted a significant turnout of residents at two locations—Alubarika Primary School in Bariga and Gbagada Junior High School—to purchase various items.

Security personnel, including the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), are present to ensure orderliness and safety at the food markets.

Mrs. Amaka, one of the residents who bought items, expressed satisfaction with both the food market and the prices of the items, considering them affordable.

“I want to encourage other state governors to adopt this approach; it’s a fantastic and commendable initiative,” Mrs. Amaka remarked.

Other residents also urged vendors and traders to uphold good maintenance practices to ensure that the food markets remain clean, orderly, and hygienic at all times.

Mrs. Moshood praised the state government for establishing these food markets, which have made shopping experiences more convenient for residents.
