Matthew Bem: Benue man lands in prison for allegedly killing his wife

A Makurdi Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of one Matthew Bem in a correction center in Makurdi for allegedly killing his wife, Mngusonum Bem. The 42-year-old farmer, residing in Korinya Settlement in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue, has been charged with culpable homicide.

However, the Chief Magistrate, Mr. T.K. Atta, did not take his plea due to jurisdictional limitations. The case has been adjourned until December 20, 2023, for further mention.

According to the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Godwin Ato, the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Tse-Agberagba, on October 26, 2023, via a letter dated the same day. The letter explained that on October 24, 2023, the defendant and his 30-year-old wife engaged in a fight, during which the defendant allegedly picked up a knife and fatally stabbed his wife. The prosecutor mentioned that the defendant was arrested during the police investigation and voluntarily confessed to committing the crime.

The offense is in violation of section 222 of the penal code law of Benue, 2004.
