French defender Benjamin Mendy has reportedly taken legal action against his former club Manchester City, seeking a substantial sum of over 11.5 million dollars in unpaid wages. The twist comes after Mendy’s recent acquittal from charges of rape and attempted rape.
As revealed by insidesport.in, Mendy’s claim centers around the contention that Manchester City owes him an estimated 9-10 million pounds gross in unpaid wages. The claim gains traction with the assertion that Mendy’s agent is engaged in negotiations with the club to secure the outstanding payments. These negotiations are anchored on the premise that Mendy has been exonerated of all charges brought against him.
Highlighting the backdrop of this dispute, it is notable that Manchester City ceased paying Mendy since September 2021. This halt in payments coincided with the club’s suspension of Mendy following the announcement of charges against him.
Presently plying his trade with Ligue 1 outfit FC Lorient, Mendy’s financial situation has taken an additional hit. In a bid to avert bankruptcy, he is reportedly in the process of selling his Cheshire residence. This drastic step is driven by his tax debt amounting to nearly £800,000 owed to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), as revealed in court proceedings.
Mendy, who made a high-profile switch from Monaco to Manchester City in 2017 for a record-breaking transfer fee of £52 million, has had a storied career. His time at City saw him clinch three Premier League titles under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola. He featured in 75 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and a notable 14 assists to the team.
Mendy’s journey was marred by serious legal allegations, as he faced accusations of rape and sexual assault involving six women between October 2020 and August 2021. However, he was ultimately cleared of all charges by a jury at Chester Crown Court in a verdict announced last month.
