Mexico head coach, Gerardo Martino has commended his players for the performance and win against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Martino’s Mexico kicked off their preparation for the FIFA World Cup with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria at the AT &T Stadium on Sunday.
El Tri went ahead after 13 minutes when Santiago Gimenez found himself all alone with goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and steered home despite the goalkeeper effort to keep the ball away.
Nigeria equalized in the 54th minute, from Calvin Bassey’s superb in-swinger which was headed home by Cyriel Dessers.
However, the Central American side got their second in the 56th minute, as William Troost-Ekong swept into his own goal, while trying to clear the ball from danger.
“The game plan has always been reflected, but we lacked continuity. Today we associated — we are getting back things we had lost,” the Mexico coach said after the game.
“It doesn’t matter who plays, we will not change our game plan.Today, we played the ones with the longest time with us this camp.”
“We see great potential with Santi [Giménez], and we value him a lot. I understand he is linked to our future, but we want him in
our present, and we are happy with his performance with the National Team,” he concluded.
