Ministerial screening: Why Senate didn’t grill Wike — Akpabio

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has provided an explanation for why the senators did not subject the immediate past governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, to intense questioning during the screening for ministerial nominees. Akpabio cited Wike’s past experiences as both a governor and a minister under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Wike’s impressive track record and previous appearance before the Senate for screening when he was nominated as a minister by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan contributed to the decision not to extensively grill him this time. Acknowledging his previous service as a minister, Akpabio stated that it was unnecessary to ask him numerous questions as he had already been thoroughly assessed before.

As a result, after presenting a brief profile, Wike was asked to take a “bow and go” following an appeal made by Senator Barinada Mpigi (PDP, Rivers). The decision to let him proceed smoothly in the screening process was based on his prior experience and performance in a ministerial role.

“Having been nominated again for a ministerial position, there is no point asking him many questions,” Akpabio said.
