A suspected thief was killed by a mob on Wednesday near Modern Market in Makurdi, Benue State, after allegedly attempting to steal from a church in the area.
Witnesses told newsmen that the suspect and two accomplices reportedly broke into a church office, stole valuables, and attempted to flee. Local residents, alerted by a young girl who saw the men enter the church, quickly mobilized and chased the suspects.
While two of the men managed to escape, one was caught and subsequently beaten to death by the crowd.
A resident recounted, “Robbers have been terrorizing us here for a while. Today, a girl going to a nearby church noticed three young men entering the building. She raised the alarm, which drew the attention of neighbors who then saw the suspects trying to escape.”
Police later arrived at the scene, evacuating the body of the deceased. The Assistant Public Relations Officer for the Benue State Command, Harry Ekwo, confirmed the incident, though he noted that no formal report of a church theft had been filed.
“The police have taken the body to a morgue, but we cannot confirm if the deceased was indeed an armed robber,” Ekwo stated.
