Russia 2018: Mohamed Salah makes Egypt’s World Cup squad despite injury

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named in Egypt’s World Cup squad despite being injured in the Champions League final.

Salah is presentlyl undergoing treatment for a shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League final after a rough tackle from Sergio Ramos.

Salah, who scored a total of 44 goals for Liverpool last season in all competitions, was forced out of the final in tears last month clutching his left shoulder after being wrestled to the ground by Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

Salah, 25, will not meet up with his team-mates until 9th June as he continues his recovery from the shoulder injury, the Egyptian Football Association said.

Egypt’s opening World Cup fixture is against Uruguay on 15th June.

They meet hosts Russia on 19th June and conclude their campaign in Group A against Saudi Arabia on 25th June.

Salah 95th-minute penalty in the final qualification game made it possible for Egypt to be at the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

But in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, Salah left the pitch in tears midway through the first half after landing heavily on his shoulder following a challenge by Sergio Ramos.

Egypt’s national team doctor said he met Salah soon after the final and subsequently confirmed his absence “would not exceed” three weeks.

Hector Cuper’s Egypt drew 0-0 against Colombia in Italy on Friday without Salah.

He will also miss Wednesday’s final friendly with Belgium, but will meet up with his team-mates once they return to Cairo for an open training session on 9 June prior to their departure for Russia.
