Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, testified in a coroner’s court on Wednesday, revealing that his son had been living with singer Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, since December 2019. The testimony came as part of the coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
The young musician passed away on September 12 and was laid to rest the following day. His death has sparked controversies, leading the Lagos State Government to initiate a coroner’s inquest.
During his testimony before Coroner Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, Joseph mentioned that he and his son had lived together for 18 years. However, he admitted he didn’t know the exact house where his late son resided with Naira Marley.
Joseph revealed that his son left his home at the age of consent to assist Naira Marley and pursue his own music career. He claimed to have seen Mohbad three days before his death and only viewed his casket in a photograph. The deceased had assured him that he could resolve his issues with Naira Marley.
Joseph also stated that Mohbad’s property was under the control of his mother-in-law and that the deceased frequently informed him about possessions held by his wife and her family. He alleged that his daughter-in-law had been unfaithful and had once put sleeping pills in his food when they lived with Naira Marley.
Joseph mentioned that after reconciling with his mother, Mohbad had bought a car for him.
At the outset of the proceedings, the coroner expressed condolences to Joseph on his son’s passing and assured him that justice would be served.
On October 4, a Yaba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos remanded Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu (aka Sam Larry) in police custody in connection with Mohbad’s death.
