Money can’t buy happiness — Elon Musk

Elon Musk has ignited widespread discussion on social media after suggesting that financial success does not automatically lead to happiness, even as he remains the richest person on the planet.

The Tesla chief executive shared the thought on Thursday through a post on X.

“Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about,” Musk wrote.

The message quickly went viral, recording over 51 million views, around 56,000 reposts and a flood of comments at the time this report was compiled, with users sharply divided in their reactions.

Some commentators agreed with Musk’s view, noting that wealth cannot insulate people from emotional struggles or personal difficulties. Others countered that money plays a major role in improving living standards, comfort and access to opportunities.

Musk offered no additional details or clarification to explain the remark.

In the past, the billionaire entrepreneur has openly discussed the intense pressure that comes with leading high-profile companies, constant public attention and overseeing multiple global businesses at once.

His fortune has also seen significant swings in recent years, largely influenced by changes in Tesla’s stock value and broader market trends.

Beyond Tesla, Musk heads SpaceX and several other ventures, keeping him firmly in the spotlight amid growing involvement in technology, regulation debates and United States politics.

Data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index shows that on December 16, 2025, Musk became the first individual to amass a net worth of $638 billion, marking a 42.7 per cent increase compared to December 2024.

Earlier, on October 28, Musk who founded artificial intelligence company xAI revealed the launch of Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia connected to his AI projects.

His latest comment has once again revived conversations around money, happiness and whether immense wealth truly guarantees personal fulfilment.
