More troubles for Akume as AMCON takes over his property in Benue [PHOTOS]

By Johnson Arubi

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, (AMCON) has commenced the takeover of some property owned by defeated Senator George Akume in Makurdi and Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.

The property include the Forte Oil filling station near Ministry of Works along old bridge road in Makurdi and Hotel Raphael located on Atini Iyobe Street, Judges Quarters, Makurdi. The other property is a filling station located near APC office in Wannune, Tarka.

According to reliable information, Akume obtained a loan from AMCON which he used to fund his failed Senatorial campaign bid and used the said property as collateral.

The embattled Senator was in Aso Villa recently to plead with the Chief of Staff Abba Kyari to to get the President’s intervention into the matter to save his property but his pleas fell on deaf ears.

According to the information, the Villa is angry with Akume over his failure to deliver Benue to APC despite collecting N2.1 billion.

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), recently listed Senator Akume among 350 Nigerians who are responsible for more than 80 per cent of the N5.4 trillion debt portfolio of the company.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of AMCON, Ahmed Kuru who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, lamented the refusal of the debtors to pay the loans despite repeated reminders.

He said many of the debtors were yet to pay as AMCON had only recovered about N700 billion, and stressed that the organisation had no other option than to retrieve its funds from the likes of Senator George Akume.

“Our responsibility is first to intervene, then provide support before we recover, we have done the two, nobody has complained, now that we are doing the third people are complaining. The people complaining are those people that do not want to meet their obligations. Some of the obligors owe as much as N200 billion.”

Mr Kuru said that the only way to get those evading their paybacks was to use the instrument of law as seen in the sealing of Senator Akume’s property.
