Moro Ojomo credits Nigerian roots for Super Bowl success

Nigerian-American football player Moro Ojomo has credited his Nigerian upbringing and deep-rooted passion for the country as the key factors behind his success.

Speaking to journalists upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday, Ojomo reflected on the impact of his heritage on his career.

Ojomo, who made history on February 9, 2025, by leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory, emphasised the importance of perseverance and seizing opportunities. His Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs with a commanding 40-22 win in Super Bowl LIX, securing the franchise’s fifth NFL title.

Addressing the media in Lagos, the NFL star urged Nigerians to remain focused on their goals, highlighting the numerous opportunities available to them.

He said: “I have a drive and motivation that stems from my upbringing as a Nigerian and my passion for this country allows me to excel and Nigeria has helped me excel at the biggest stage.”

On American football, he said: “It is everything when you look at the amount of Africans, specifically Nigerians, that are in American football, it is a lot. The most important thing is giving our youths an opportunity to get into American football, it is a pathway for education, high school and college degrees and it is a pathway to make Nigeria bigger on a worldly view.

Reflecting on his roots, Ojomo acknowledged the values that shaped him: “I think about the community, the friends I grew up with, the heritage and my family values of being a Nigerian such as hard work, education, sports. I played a little bit of soccer and basketball but American football  was what led me to the most success.”

Encouraging Nigerians to pursue their dreams, he added: “Believe that you can achieve anything. Nigerians are great, and I urge everyone to take advantage of the opportunities available. Don’t let anyone deter you from reaching your goals.”
