Motorists and commuters plying the Keffi-Makurdi road have lamented government’s neglect of the road following a gridlock that lasted for about seven hours on Friday.
Commuters who couldn’t afford to waste time on the road resorted to trekking.
One of the travellers, Mrs Gloria Kayode, who could not hold back tears while speaking with our correspondent, explained that she brought her children from Makurdi, Benue State where she is based for school resumption at the Federal Government College, Keffi, Nasarawa State and was on her way back to her base when the gridlock began.
“I brought my children to school this morning from Makurdi for their school resumption at FGC Keffi and after the entire process of their registration at the school, I boarded a vehicle from the motor park in Keffi at exactly 10:12am. We were not up to ten minutes in the journey when the road became completely impassible and till now, 5:18pm, we have remained at a spot.
“If the federal government are really serious in constructing this road, they would have been through by now because this road construction has been ongoing for some years now which shows that they are only playing politics with the welfare of Nigerians who voted them into office. I am stranded at the moment and I don’t know what to do”, she said.
A commuter who was seen trekking and sweating profusely with a 2-year-old child on her back, Mrs Anna Chukwudi, told our correspondent that because of the gridlock, motorcycle and tricycle operators in the area, hiked their fees as they were collecting double of the actual amount for carrying passengers which prompted her to trek under the sun.
