Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy has voiced his disagreement with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s decision to appoint Bruno Fernandes as the new Red Devils captain. Instead, Murphy believes that the role should have been given to Lisandro Martinez, as he sees the Argentine as a true leader compared to Fernandes.
Murphy shared his thoughts during a candid interview with talkSPORT, where he expressed his reservations about Fernandes as captain material. While acknowledging Fernandes’ qualities, Murphy believes that the Portuguese midfielder falls short in certain aspects of leadership, citing his tendency to moan and react on the pitch as negative examples. Additionally, Murphy highlighted concerns about Fernandes’ defensive work, which he believes is not up to par for a captain.
Despite his reservations, Murphy recognized Fernandes’ undeniable talents, including his energy and durability, making him a wonderful player on the field. However, when it comes to leadership, Murphy firmly believes that Lisandro Martinez would have been a more fitting choice.
Notably, Erik ten Hag recently appointed Fernandes as the new captain of Manchester United, following the stripping of Harry Maguire from the captaincy.
