‘My father called skit making stupid business, regretted funding my education’ – Sabinus
Popular Nigerian skitmaker, Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has opened up about the initial resistance he faced from his father over his career choice.
Speaking in an interview with media personality VJ Adams, the comedian said his father strongly wanted him to pursue law.
According to him, he later opted for Linguistics and Communication Studies after repeated attempts to gain admission into law school failed.
Sabinus explained that he stumbled upon his comedic talent while studying at the University of Port Harcourt, where he began experimenting with skits and online content creation.
He disclosed that his father became upset after discovering he had ventured into skit making, even questioning why he had invested in his education.
The comedian, however, noted that the situation changed over time, especially when he began supporting his father financially through earnings from comedy.
Recalling the experience, he said, “At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer.
I tried my best but I couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport.
“It was on the campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming.
“After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters.
My sisters confirmed to him that I was into comedy. He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”
