NACA assures Nigerians of uninterrupted HIV drug supply

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has reassured Nigerians, especially those living with HIV, of a consistent supply of antiretroviral drugs, despite recent global funding uncertainties. NACA’s Director-General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, emphasized that HIV treatment remains free at government-approved health facilities, dismissing claims of impending charges for antiretroviral medications.

In response to potential challenges arising from changes in international aid, the Nigerian government has proactively allocated substantial funds to bolster the healthcare sector. This includes $1.07 billion approved by the Federal Executive Council for healthcare reforms and an additional N4.8 billion specifically earmarked for HIV treatment. Furthermore, the Nigerian Senate recently allocated an extra N300 billion to the health sector in the 2025 budget, underscoring the government’s commitment to sustaining HIV treatment and prevention services.

To ensure long-term sustainability and reduce dependency on foreign aid, plans are underway to commence domestic production of HIV commodities, including test kits and antiretroviral drugs, before the end of 2025. This initiative aims to create an enabling environment for ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

NACA remains dedicated to collaborating with all stakeholders to maintain uninterrupted access to quality HIV prevention, treatment, and care services for all Nigerians, reaffirming that there is no shortage of drugs and consumables, and services for HIV treatment, testing, and prevention continue nationwide.
