Naija News: Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Friday, 3rd May 2024

1. Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, declared on Thursday (today) that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is resolute in its commitment to combat corruption impartially and without any bias.

   IDOMA VOICE reports that Shettima made this assertion during the Second Edition of The Chronicle Roundtable in Abuja today, where he also highlighted the government’s efforts to address the country’s unemployment issue.

2. A new report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has highlighted a significant rise in the cost of a healthy diet across Nigeria.

   IDOMA VOICE reports that the national average reached ₦982 in March 2024, a 4.7% increase from the ₦938 recorded in February. This demonstrates the ongoing economic pressures facing Nigerian households.

3. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has acknowledged errors in the drone strikes on the Tudun Biri community in Kaduna State, resulting in the deaths of numerous innocent citizens.

   IDOMA VOICE reports that the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Edward Buba, disclosed this information during a media briefing on Thursday.

4. The Presidency has said the N615,000 minimum wage demanded by organised labour is unrealistic and not feasible.

   Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, had said the organised labour had proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage to the federal government.

5. The Federal Government has initiated a 15-day emergency fuel distribution to ensure widespread availability of the commodity amidst escalating fuel scarcity nationwide.

   Furthermore, the government announced that Premium Motor Spirit vessels would persist in docking at the shoreline to unload gasoline into diverse depots, enabling subsequent distribution to various filling stations.

7. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has threatened to cripple the supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol over non-payment of ₦200 billion bridging claims.

   IPMAN’s Unit Chairman of Aba Depot, Mazi Oliver Okolo, made this known in at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

8. The Port Harcourt-Aba railway line was officially opened for public use on Tuesday, marking the commencement of commercial train services by the Federal Government.

   This milestone, previously delayed twice, saw the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, supervising the launch of commercial operations along the 62.0-kilometer route from Port Harcourt to Aba at the Port Harcourt Railway Station.

9. The House of Representatives on Tuesday directed the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to stop the introduction of the new electricity tariff for Band A customers.
