Tobi Amusan has secured her place in the final of the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. Overcoming a delayed start, Amusan triumphed in Heat 2, registering a time of 12.56 seconds.
In Heat 2, Jamaica’s Ackera Nuggent claimed the second spot with a timing of 12.60 seconds, closely followed by Canada’s Naddine Visser, who completed the race in 12.62 seconds.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has chosen not to confirm 17 out of the 39 nominees for commissioners and special advisers presented for screening by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Only 22 of the governor’s choices for cabinet positions received confirmation from the Assembly.
Notable individuals among those not approved include Gbenga Omotoso, who previously held the role of Commissioner for Information and Strategy; Prof. Akin Abayomi, the former Health Commissioner; and Sam Egube, the former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, among others.
The General Superintendent of Deeper Christina Life Ministry, Pastor WF Kumuyi has come under harsh criticism over his recent comment on the state of the nation. Kumuyi had disclosed that Nigerians should be rest assured that God will rebuild Nigeria through President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking with newsmen ahead of the monthly Global Crusade of the Church scheduled for Osogbo on Thursday, the soft-spoken cleric said God has not forsaken the country and Nigerians will witness a new country through the President.
Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria, is scheduled to appear in a court in the UK on October 2nd to face bribery charges related to her time in office, according to the UK National Crime Agency (NCA). This comes after British authorities provided evidence to US prosecutors leading to the recovery of $53.1 million in assets allegedly linked to her earlier this year.
Alison-Madueke was arrested in London in October 2015 and has been on bail since then. Her arrest was in connection to corruption allegations that have followed her during and after her tenure in the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
5. A joint operation conducted by the Port Harcourt Local Government Authority Area Security Watch and the police has led to the arrest of 12 suspected internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys,” who were allegedly involved in the burial of a newborn baby alive at the Andoni waterfront in Eagle Island, the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria.
The operation was carried out based on a tip-off received by the vigilante group in collaboration with the Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch. Residents reported witnessing a group of young men engaging in incantations and digging the ground near the waterfront.
6. The newly appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has given the green light for the demolition of 30 slum areas across the territory, including Garki and Jabi. These slums, encompassing approximately 6,000 buildings, were previously identified by the Federal Capital Development Authority in an assessment predating the current administration.
The FCTA, under Wike’s direction, is embarking on this extensive demolition campaign as a strategic measure to eliminate shanties and unauthorized structures within the nation’s capital. The recent administration, under Wike’s leadership, is resolute in its determination to uphold the original master plan of the FCT and eliminate any encroachments or deviations from it.
7. Following the suspension of Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar due to allegations of highhandedness and sexual harassment of female students, Dr. Rose Ugbe has been chosen to serve as the acting Dean.
Dr. Ugbe’s appointment, as confirmed by a statement from the University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, became effective on Tuesday, August 22. She will fulfill the role until a permanent Dean is elected for the faculty.
8. The Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia has rolled out plans for the disbursement of the five billion naira given by federal government to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on the citizens.
Recall that the Federal Government has approved five billion naira to each state of the Federation to enable them procure items for distribution to the people to mitigate the hash effect of fuel subsidy removal.
9. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has launched a manhunt for a Lekki Lagos-based notorious drug dealer, Sowunmi Ayodeji Kayode, who is now on the run after driving his luxury car to crush an NDLEA officer in his bid to escape arrest when operatives were on a search of his house last weekend.
Anti-narcotics officers of the Agency had on Friday 18th August stormed the residence of the wanted drug dealer located at 2/3 Adetola Ayeni close, Lekki, Lagos for a search and possible arrest following credible intelligence that he was dealing in illicit drugs in his house.
10. Immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has warned Nigerians, especially those who are constantly preoccupied with thoughts to forget about him. IDOMA VOICE reports that the former governor stated this on Wednesday via Twitter.
Recall that El-Rufai, who was initially nominated as minister by President Bola Tinubu failed security test and failed to scale through senate screening.
