  1. This morning, it was revealed that former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, and renowned medical scholar Ali Pate are among the ministerial nominees forwarded to the Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The list also includes legal luminary Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), economist Olawale Edun, banker Adebayo Adelabu, former Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, APC Women Leader Mrs. Betta Edu, Senator Ben Ayade, and eminent journalist Dele Alake, who currently serves as the Special Adviser on Media, Strategy, and Special Duties.

  2. Two police officers were shot dead in an attack on the convoy of Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, and Investment in Abia State. The assailants also set ablaze a vehicle belonging to the ministry during the attack.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the commissioner’s convoy was on a familiarization tour to markets in Aba. Gunmen ambushed the convoy as it was en route to Ekeoha Shopping Plaza, unleashing a hail of bullets on the security detail.

  3. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the President Bola Tinubu administration, demanding the reversal of “anti-poor” policies, particularly the recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

Following a Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Tuesday, the NLC warned that if the Federal Government fails to address their concerns within seven days, they will initiate a total and indefinite strike starting on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

  4. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Chief Charles Obule, passed away in Sapele Local Government Area. The late PDP leader, who also held the traditional title of “Erhi of Okpe Kingdom,” reportedly slumped and died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness at the age of 65.

Chief Charles Obule was widely recognized in Delta State as a former governorship and senatorial aspirant of the PDP and had played a significant role in the party’s affairs. He was also a well-known businessman and philanthropist, with a reputation for contributing to the development of his community.

  5. The Senate has given its approval for the appointment of several individuals to the governing board of the North East Development Commission. Among the confirmed nominees is General Paul Tarfa (North East Adamawa), a classmate of the former president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retd.), who will serve as the chairman of the commission.

  6. At the Ogun State governorship election petition tribunal, a heated exchange erupted between journalists and lawyers over seating space, causing mild drama on Wednesday. The court was crowded with supporters from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving journalists with limited seating options.

Some lawyers demanded that journalists vacate a bench reserved for pressmen, claiming it was an extension of the bar area. This led to a confrontation, with the tribunal’s secretary, Raymonda Ezenta, angrily instructing journalists to leave the seat, stating that the court did not require their presence.

  7. President Mohamed Bazoum, although the reason for the action remained unclear. The landlocked West African nation has a history of instability, experiencing multiple coups and attempted power grabs since gaining independence from France in 1960.

The blocking of access affected both Bazoum’s official home and his offices within the presidential complex in Niamey. However, there were no signs of abnormal military deployment or gunfire in the area, and traffic appeared normal. President Bazoum, who was democratically elected in 2021, maintains a close alliance with France.

  8. Tensions have escalated in Enugu State after reports emerged of the alleged killing of three residents during protests that engulfed the Coal City metropolis.

According to DAILY POST, the protests initially stemmed from traders taking to the streets on Wednesday morning, in response to the State government’s decision to seal their shops for not opening for business on Monday. The traders expressed their discontent through the protest, seeking a resolution to the closure of their businesses.

The Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, dismissed the application for judicial review for lacking in merit.

  10. Protests have erupted in Enugu, the capital city of Coal City, following the State Government’s decision to seal businesses in the area. DAILY POST reported that the government took this action on Monday, closing numerous shops at the Ogbete Main Market for not opening on that day.

Governor Peter Mbah had previously banned the regular Monday sit-at-home, which was imposed by a faction of IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra), upon assuming office. Despite the government’s directive, many residents are still hesitant to comply, fearing potential attacks by hoodlums.
