1. An ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Water Resources, Joseph Utsev, over the sales of an asset belonging to a parastatal under his ministry.

   The committee, chaired by Julius Ihonvbere, was constituted to investigate the alleged illegal disposal of some government assets between 2010 and 2022 and the non-remittance of the revenue realised from the sales to the consolidated revenue fund (CRF).

2. The Lagos State House of Assembly is set to commence the screening of the second batch of 18 commissioner-nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This announcement was made by the Speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, during a plenary session.

   Speaker Obasa urged the screening committee, led by Mr. Fatai Mojeed, to ensure a comprehensive screening process for the new nominees and submit a report to the house by Thursday.

3. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) initiative, allowing UTME candidates to use their personal phones and tablet computers for the exam at the testing center. This decision was revealed during a policy meeting in June by Ishaq Oloyede, the board’s registrar.

   JAMB emphasized that it typically costs over N1.2 billion to equip a computer-based test (CBT) center in a state like Kaduna, especially when procuring the necessary PCs for candidates to use during the examination.

4. Students and staff of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi, former known as UNIAGRIC have been left stranded after a devastating flood hit the Benue State capital.

   IDOMA VOICE recalls that a few days ago, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, alerted Nigerians of impending flooding along the River Benue Basin.

5. Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has refuted claims that he authorized a $6 billion contract awarded to Sunrise Power and Transmission Ltd for the Mambilla Hydropower Project in 2003. In an exclusive interview with TheCable, the former president challenged the legitimacy of the contract and emphasized the strict approval procedures in place during his leadership from 1999 to 2007.

   Former President Obasanjo, in response to questions about the controversial contract, asserted that no member of his cabinet had the authority to approve expenditures exceeding N25 million without his explicit consent during his presidency. He expressed his incredulity at the notion that Olu Agunloye, then the Minister of Power and Steel, could have committed the government to a $6 billion project without his knowledge and authorization.

6. The founder of Solid Rock Kingdom Church, Akwa Ibom state, Apostle John Okoriko, has declared that no evil shall befall Nigerians. He said in the last quarter of the year 2023, commonly called Ember months, God will protect his own.

   The clerioc declared this on Sunday in Uyo, while reacting to predictions allegedly by some Akwa Ibom pastors that the last quarter of the year would witness many deaths from accidents, untimely deaths and other tragic incidents or calamities.

7. The Rivers State Government has taken the decision to close down the operations of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM in Port Harcourt.

   In an official statement released on Sunday, the media organization reported that the State Government initiated the shutdown using contracted telecommunications engineers, accompanied by armed security personnel.

8. After weeks of intense speculation, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has officially announced that Wednesday, September 6th, will be the decisive day for delivering judgment in the three petitions challenging the victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

   In a statement on Monday, Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Mohammed Bangari, confirmed this crucial date. Bangari, who presides over the court that houses the Tribunal, assured the public that all necessary preparations have been made to ensure a smooth and trouble-free rendering of the verdict in the three petitions.

9. The Department of State Services, DSS, said it has uncovered plots by politicians to cause violence across the country using economic issues as an excuse. According to the secret police, students are being mobilized with ethnic associations to stage violent protests across the country.

   In a statement by the Service Spokesperson, Mr Peter Afunanya which was made available to newsmen on Monday, he said there was an intelligence report at their disposal which indicated that the planned protest was targeted at rubbishing the Federal Government and other security agencies.
