Several people are feared dead following a brutal overnight attack by suspected armed herdsmen on Tyoshin community in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
Eyewitnesses say the assailants stormed the area under the cover of darkness late Sunday night, opening fire on residents and setting homes ablaze. The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed at the time of this report, but sources described the incident as “devastating” and “one of the worst in recent times.”
Among those reportedly killed was Monday Dooden, a native of the area who had previously fled with his family from earlier violence. His brother, Akawe Francis Nts, shared his anguish in a social media post:
“Monday Dooden, my brother, we ran away from the village because of Fulani attacks to Naka over 10 years ago, but we didn’t escape. Last night you were killed by the same Fulani.”
The Naka incident followed another deadly assault earlier the same day in Edikwu Ankpali, located in Apa Local Government Area, where several other fatalities were also reported.
Residents and local leaders have continued to decry the worsening insecurity across Benue’s rural communities, calling on security agencies and the federal government to take urgent and decisive action to protect lives and property.
