Nasarawa State: Gunmen abduct four university students

The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed an alarming intrusion by gunmen in the Keffi Local Government Area, resulting in the abduction of four students from the state’s university. The students have been forcibly relocated to an undisclosed location.

Ramhan Nansel, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, provided details on the unfortunate event. The abduction took place during the early hours of Tuesday at Angwan Ka’are within the LGA. Police Commissioner Maiyaki Baba has initiated a rigorous manhunt to bring the culprits to justice.

“The command is aware of the kidnap at about 12:55 am as a distress call was received that a house located at Angwan Kaare in Keffi was invaded by unidentified armed men. The police, in collaboration with the military, responded accordingly and combed the area, but to no avail. The Commissioner of Police has ordered a manhunt for the culprits with a view to rescuing the four victims unhurt.”

The abducted students have been identified as Rahila Hanya (a 100-level student in the Science Laboratory Technology Department), Josephine Gershon (a 100-level Computer Science student), Rosemary Samuel (a 100-level Business Administration student), and Goodness Samuel (a 100-level Geography Department student).

Regarding the university’s response to the incident, Abraham Ekpo, the university’s Information and Protocol Officer, stated that no official information had been received by the institution. He mentioned that they were waiting for an official report from the Student Union Government (SUG) or the police before making any statements.

This incident adds to the growing number of student abductions by armed groups in the Northern region. Just recently, on September 22, bandits kidnapped 30 students from the Federal University in Gusau, Zamfara State. In April of this year, 10 students were abducted in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The Senate has expressed its concern over the worsening security situation in the country, including the alarming frequency of student kidnappings, leading to the summoning of the service chiefs last week.
