Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, appeared before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on Thursday for arraignment over alleged defamation.

The charges were filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In the case marked CR/297/25, Akpoti-Uduaghan is accused of making defamatory statements against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

According to the prosecution, the senator alleged that Bello conspired with Akpabio to orchestrate her assassination — a claim the government says was false and made with the intent to damage their reputations.

The controversial statements were reportedly made during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on April 3, 2025, and in a telephone conversation with Sandra C. Duru on March 27, 2025.

The Federal Government insists Akpoti-Uduaghan knowingly made the allegations despite their potential to tarnish the image of the individuals involved.

Senate President Akpabio, Yahaya Bello, and four others have been listed as witnesses in the case.

The court is expected to proceed with hearing the charges and taking the senator’s plea as the trial begins.
