The Minna Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued another warning about an imminent flood to residents in Kwara state.
According to Zainab Saidu, the head of NEMA Minna Operations Office, the flood is expected to affect the Ilorin West and Ilorin East Local Government Areas (LGAs) between July and November.
The prediction of high flood risk in these areas was made earlier in the year as part of the Annual Flood Outlook released by the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA).
Besides, other LGAs like Patigi, Offa, Edu, and Oyun have also been categorized as moderate flood risk areas and may experience significant flooding during the same period.
Ms. Saidu stressed the importance of taking precautions to prevent further damage to properties and loss of lives, especially considering that Kwara has already started experiencing flood and windstorm in some of these areas.
She urged residents in the identified areas to keep drains clean to prevent water blockage and maintain the free flow of waterways and channels.
Furthermore, those residing in flood-prone areas and near river banks are advised to prepare to relocate to safer and higher ground urgently.
The water level along River Niger is rising, and it is expected to affect the water level along its tributaries, leading to overflow and significant impacts on settlements around the rivers.
Ms. Saidu emphasized that prevention is the most effective way to handle disasters, and people must heed these warnings to protect their lives and properties.
