Vivianne Miedema, a striker for the Netherlands and a major part of the team at the ongoing Euro 2022, will be out temporarily, after testing positive for COVID-19.
On Saturday, the Dutch national women’s team began their Euro 2022 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sweden, with Miedema up in the attack formation. But, the Arsenal star will undoubtedly miss Wednesday’s game against Portugal and her ability to play again in the continental tournament will depend on the results of upcoming COVID tests.
In a statement confirming the test, the Netherlands said: “Vivianne Miedema has unfortunately tested positive for COVID-19 and will therefore be in isolation for the next few days. When she no longer has any symptoms and tests negative, she can rejoin the selection.”
Sunday’s match against Switzerland for the Netherlands in Group C may be too soon for Miedema. The Dutch are anticipated to advance to the knockout stages, but Group C is still very well matched with all four countries having one point after the first round of games.
One of the top players in the world, Miedema has 94 goals to his name in 112 games for the Netherlands.
Prior to extending her contract at Arsenal, where she has played since coming from Bayern Munich in 2017, the 25-year-old held talks with Barcelona and PSG this year for possible transfer moves.
