The Niger State Police Command has reported the discovery of a deceased newborn baby, believed to be just a day old, on a farm in Tayi village, Minna.
SP Waisu Abiodun, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the finding to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
He stated that on August 9, the GRA Police Division was alerted to the presence of the lifeless infant on the farm.
Police officers from the GRA Division responded to the scene and called in welfare officials from the Chanchaga Local Government Area.
A medical professional who was brought in confirmed the baby’s death.
The case is currently under investigation, with local community support sought to identify and apprehend those responsible for the abandonment.
A local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, speculated that the baby was abandoned by a woman who had become pregnant outside of marriage.
They suggested that the infant might have been left alive initially but succumbed to the cold exposure, noting that this was an unprecedented event in their area.
