Newcastle United ended a 70-year wait for domestic silverware—and claimed their first major trophy since 1969—with a well-earned 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
The Toon Army erupted in celebration as goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak on either side of half-time sealed a historic win that will cement manager Eddie Howe and his players in Tyneside folklore.
Burn, fresh off his first England call-up, rose highest to power home Kieran Trippier’s corner in first-half stoppage time. Isak then doubled the lead seven minutes after the break, clinically finishing from Jacob Murphy’s knockdown.
Liverpool, still reeling from a midweek Champions League exit on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain, managed a late response through substitute Federico Chiesa, who struck in injury time.
Despite a nervy conclusion, Newcastle held firm to lift their first major honour since winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 and their first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup.
