The short-term hiring of former Liverpool goalkeeper, Loris Karius, by Newcastle United has been officially announced.
In the summer, the Magpies loaned Martin Dubravka to Manchester United before losing their new backup Karl Darlow to injury, leaving only recent arrival, Nick Pope, as their sole goalkeeping option.
Newcastle could only sign free agents because the transfer window was closed, so they quickly decided on former Liverpool goalkeeper, Karius, who has signed a three-month deal with an option to extend until the end of the season.
Manager, Eddie Howe, said: “We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group. He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.”
Karius, whose last game was in February, was released from his contract this summer, ending his six-year stay at Liverpool. He made 49 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, however, following the 2017–18 Champions League final, he did not play for the team again, instead spending time on loan with Union Berlin and Besiktas before sitting out the full 202–21 season at Anfield.
