Brazilian forward Neymar Jr. exited the field with a knee injury during their 2-0 loss to Uruguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Neymar was visibly emotional as medical staff stretchered him off the pitch at the conclusion of the first half. The former Paris Saint-Germain star was later observed leaving the stadium with the aid of crutches.

In the 44th minute of the match at Centenario Stadium, the 31-year-old stumbled and fell during a run, clutching his left knee. Players from both teams gathered around him immediately.

Richarlison replaced Neymar in the game. The team doctor for Brazil, Rodrigo Lasmar, confirmed post-match that Neymar had undergone initial tests, with further examinations scheduled for Wednesday.

“These 24 hours will be important to see how the knee will respond, how the swelling will be,” Lasmar said.

“Imaging tests that will define a definitive diagnosis. It’s too early to say [if it’s a ligament injury]. Let’s wait for the exams calmly, evaluate calmly, and as soon as we have a definition we will let you know.”
