Nigeria 3 Australia 2: Oshoala makes history

Asisat Oshoala etched her name in the history books of women’s football, becoming the first Super Falcons player to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cups. The Barcelona Femeni forward achieved this milestone during Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 victory against Australia on Thursday.

The highly anticipated clash saw the Super Falcons taking on the co-hosts at the Lang Park in Brisbane. Uchenna Kanu and Osinachi Ohale were also on target for Nigeria, securing a crucial win in their Group B encounter.

Oshoala’s momentous goal came in the 64th minute, just moments after she was introduced as a substitute. Capitalizing on a defensive error from the Australian team, Oshoala displayed her clinical finishing to give the Super Falcons a crucial third goal.

The 28-year-old forward had previously found the back of the net at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups. In 2015, she scored during Nigeria’s 3-3 draw against Sweden, while in 2019, she contributed to the 2-0 victory over South Korea.

Oshoala’s dedication and passion for the national team were evident in her post-match interview. “Each tournament I go, I wanna make sure I did everything; fight for my teammates, and fight for this badge. This [Nigeria] is the best country in the world,” she proclaimed.

Her historic achievement has further solidified her status as one of Africa’s finest footballers, and her influence on the pitch continues to inspire her teammates and fans alike.

The Super Falcons’ victory against Australia has put them in a strong position in Group B. With the win, they now have six points and are on the verge of securing a spot in the knockout stage of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
