Nigeria defeats Ghana 3-1 to secure 2024 CHAN qualification
The Super Eagles B team, popularly known as the CHAN Eagles, delivered a dominant performance on Saturday to secure their spot in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) by defeating arch-rivals Ghana 3-1 on aggregate.
The match, held in Uyo, saw Nigeria outclass the Black Galaxies with an impressive display, following a goalless draw in the first leg played in Accra.
The postponed 2024 CHAN tournament is set to kick off on February 1, hosted across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Match Highlights
Sodiq Ismail opened the scoring in the 19th minute, taking full advantage of a defensive lapse to beat Ghana’s offside trap.
Three minutes later, team captain Nduka Junior pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty box and smashed it home to double Nigeria’s lead.
Midfielder Isaac Saviour made it 3-0 after intercepting a pass from a Ghanaian defender, rounding the goalkeeper, and slotting the ball into an empty net.
Ghana managed to pull one back in the 73rd minute when Amankona Stephen found the back of the net, but it proved to be a mere consolation as Nigeria’s first-half brilliance sealed the game.
Memorable Moments
In the closing stages, 44-year-old veteran Rabiu Ali, a Kano Pillars legend, entered the game to loud cheers, showcasing his enduring passion and commitment to Nigerian football.
With this victory, the CHAN Eagles are set to represent Nigeria proudly in East Africa next year, continuing their quest for continental glory.
