1. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has again filed an appeal against the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria which ordered the striking lecturers to return back to work.
Report says the court had yet to fix a date for the official hearing of the suit.
2. The Zamfara State State Police Command has rescued 27 persons kidnapped from Kawa, Gwashi, Tungar Rogo and Anka towns in Anka and Bukkuyum Local Government Areas of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Muhammad Shehu, while presenting the rescued victims to the state Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Mamman Tsafe, in Gusau on Saturday, said that the victims were rescued unconditionally.
3. Convicted actor and an inmate of the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Kirikiri, Olarewaju Omiyinka James alias Baba Ijesha may be doing time at the prison for a despicable act of child molestation but among his inmates he has become something of a hero.
Baba Ijesha was said to have killed a snake with his bare hands at the facility recently. According to Alaroye, the Nollywood actor was said to have seized a big snake lurking under a generating set close to the Chief Warder’s office and killed it by slamming it to the ground.
4. King Charles III, the British monarch, has described the devastating floods that have ravaged the country in recent months as deeply saddening.
In a condolence message to President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, the British monarch said he and his wife were “deeply saddened” about the situation. He sympathised with victims, adding that his thoughts were with those working to support the recovery efforts.
5. Ethnic youth leaders in the country have accused some senators loyal to some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors of plotting to ensure the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, ahead of the 2023 general elections.
The youths under the aegis of the Nigerian Ethnic Youths Leaders Council (NEYLC), therefore, warned those allegedly fingered in the move to desist from it.
6. The Anambra State government has clarified reasons why it suspended all betting outfits in hotels, restaurants and bars in the state.
The government said the suspension became necessary following alleged fraudulent activities perpetrated in the centres, adding that it has not banned the operations of Bet9ja and other betting outfits in the state.
7. Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), on Saturday, called for the postponement of the 2023 national population and housing census.
The group said postponement of the exercise is vital to guarantee free and fair elections in the 2023 elections.
8. Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries, has denied using mobile police officers for rituals.
Suleman made the claim while reacting to a viral video of a police officer identified as Seyi Peter alleging that he supplies him with his colleagues for rituals.
9. Ahead of the 2023 general election, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as destroyers, adding that they don’t deserve to be supported.
Atiku, who stated this while addressing party supporters in Benin, Edo State, Saturday during his party’s presidential rally, urged the people to continue to be loyal to the PDP.
10. A 31-year-old grassroots footballer from Bayelsa State, Ernest Peremobowei, has reportedly died while trying to rescue victims of a boat mishap in the raging flood of Bebelebiri Community, in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
The corpse of the deceased was, however, recovered two days after while some of his body parts were allegedly eaten up by fish in the river.
