Simon Adingra has emerged as a potential game-changer for Ivory Coast in the upcoming AFCON final against Nigeria, with former Arsenal defender Johan Djourou tipping the Brighton & Hove winger to shine at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
Despite suffering a defeat to Nigeria earlier in the tournament, Ivory Coast is counting on players like Adingra to turn the tide in their favor. Djourou, who hails from Abidjan and represented Switzerland internationally, is lending his support to the Elephants and believes in Adingra’s ability to make a significant impact.
The duo previously played together at Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, where Adingra showcased his talent before being sidelined by a hamstring injury at the start of the AFCON. However, his return to fitness has been instrumental in Ivory Coast’s journey to the final, notably contributing to their victory over Mali in the quarterfinals.
Djourou holds Adingra in high regard, suggesting that the youngster possesses the qualities to thrive at top Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City. “Simon is the typical young guy that wants to learn,” Djourou remarked. “It was never a question of if he was going to make it, it’s just to give him the platform to do it. It’s hard to put a limit on what he can do.”
He further emphasized Adingra’s talent and work ethic, expressing confidence in his potential to become a star player for elite clubs. “He’s so talented and has a very great personality. He works, wants to be better every day,” Djourou noted.
Regarding Adingra’s potential impact in the AFCON final, Djourou acknowledged the challenges posed by the winger’s recent injury but remained optimistic about his ability to shine on the grand stage. “If his fitness allows him, I’m sure he’ll be [the star in the final],” he stated.
