Nigerian govt to support 10m households with N4bn cash transfers, loans

The Federal Government has approved N4 billion for conditional cash transfers to vulnerable households in Nigeria, as part of efforts to address the growing humanitarian crisis in the country.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwada, announced the approval during the launch of the 2025 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan at the United Nations House in Abuja on Thursday.

The cash transfer program, set to begin in February and run through April, will support up to 10 million displaced households, with a focus on the most vulnerable, particularly in the Northeast.

In addition to the cash transfers, the government has allocated N2 billion in interest-free loans for farmers in rural communities to boost food production and improve self-sufficiency. Loans will range from N300,000 to N400,000 per household. The program will prioritize women, especially widows, pregnant women, and those with disabilities, recognizing the unique challenges they face, particularly in displaced communities.

Yilwada also highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of internally displaced persons and other affected groups, focusing on long-term resilience and sustainable solutions in conflict-affected regions like Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to alleviate poverty and provide urgent relief to those in need.
