1. Students of the University of Ilorin on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest to express their disappointment over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, vowing that they would not have anything to do with the 2023 general election if the government allowed the strike to linger.
This was just as students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, staged a similar protest on the strike in front of The PUNCH Place on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.
2. The apex Igbo socio-political group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Tuesday said former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, have declared total support for the South-East presidency in 2023.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday in Enugu by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, the two leaders reiterated their support for the South East region to produce the successor of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in 2023 when the organisation’s Political Action Committee paid them visits on Monday.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari has said there is no going back on leaving office after completing his constitutionally guaranteed tenure, emphasising that the May 29, 2023, handover date is sacrosanct. Speaking through Malam Garba Shehu, his media aide, Buhari said the current administration would honour the constitution and people’s right to decide.
2. The Federal Government, on Tuesday, said Nigerians spend between USD1.2 and USD1.6 billion (N664bn at 415/$) on medical tourism annually. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said this during a guided tour of Duchess International Hospital in Lagos.
3. Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has expressed concern over the kind of messages the All Progressives Congress, APC, will be telling Nigerians with former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate, saying he is not sellable. The Governor spoke Tuesday while responding to questions from State House reporters after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
4. The Senate, on Tuesday, corrected a “fundamental error” in the Electoral Act 2022 recently passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
While political parties are close to conducting primaries to elect candidates for the 2023 general election, the Act does not provide for members elected into public offices and executives of the parties, known as statutory delegates, to participate and vote in the conventions, congresses, or meetings of parties.
5. The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned four teachers of Chrisland Schools, Lagos State, for allegedly covering up sexual acts involving some pupils of the school.
The teachers were arraigned on Tuesday before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on two counts of conduct likely to cause breach of public peace and attempt to pervert justice.
6. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has nullified the Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulations, 2019 for being “an invalid statutory instrument.” The court further nullified all sales and disposal of assets made by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami, SAN, under the Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulations, 2019.
7. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) says the spate of insecurity in the South-East is not targeted at herders. The South-East Zonal Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, said this in an interview in Enugu on Tuesday.
8. The National Leader of All Progressives Congress and presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has promised to work towards creating a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria that will surpass the dreams of the country’s founding fathers.
According to a statement issued by Tinubu Media Office on Tuesday, the former governor of Lagos State said this when he met with APC delegates in Katsina State, on Monday.
9. The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Kukah, has warned that the 2023 general elections will not be free, fair or credible, unless those at the helm of affairs are able to create a sense of common citizenship among Nigerians.
Bishop Kukah said he was concerned that the Nigerian population has been polarized, with most of the electorates deeply divided along ethnic and religious lines.
10. The Federal Government says with the coming up of affordable world class health facilities, Nigeria will soon put an end to the over N500 billion being spent on medical tourism annually.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said this on Tuesday in Lagos at a media tour of Duchess International Hospital, a 100-bed state-of-the-art multi-specialist healthcare facility.
