NOW TRENDING: Senate fails to pass Dickson Akoh’s Peace Corps Bill
The national commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, Ambassador Dickson Akoh has reacted to the failure of the senate to pass the bill to establish the body on Thursday.
The bill to establish the body had successfully passed through the second reading and the Senate Committee on Interior was subsequently mandated to carry out public hearings and recommend to the Senate appropriately.
IDOMA VOICE reports that, all hopes were dashed Thursday morning when the Bill was called on Thursday for consideration and passage, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Bayero Nafada (GombeNorth) was unavoidably absent.
Reacting on Thursday shortly after the development, Akoh said he was confident the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly would pass the bill in the next seating.
He called on his supporters, team to remain resolute as the birth of the body is in sight.
The statement as obtained by IDOMA VOICE reads:
“Today the 13th of October 2016, the Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps was considered at the floor of the Senate for the third time. Presiding over the proceedings, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki entertained debate as Senator Abdulahi Adamu moved the motion for the reading.
“With Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Bayero U. Nafada (Gombe North) unavoidably absent from the hallowed Chamber, and a successful legislation leading to amendments in the Bill to suit the operations of the Nigerian Peace Corps when finally passed, the proceeding was stalled for further actions.
“Having followed the procedures, we are confident of a speedy passage during the next conveyed sitting which will surely have the Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior in attendance, to present the Bill. Keep the hopes alive, do not be distracted!”
