Nigerian Reps knock Tinubu over delay in submitting 2025 budget proposal

The House of Representatives has expressed dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration over delays in submitting the 2025 budget proposal to the National Assembly.

Lawmakers noted that the delay infringes on the National Assembly’s ability to fulfill its constitutional duties, as outlined in Section 88(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, due to non-compliance with Section 11(1)(b) of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) 2007.

In response, the House called on the Executive to adhere to the Fiscal Responsibility Act by submitting the budget proposal in a timely manner, and directed the Committees on National Planning, Appropriation, and Finance to ensure compliance within two weeks.

This decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Rep. Clement Jimbo during Wednesday’s plenary. Jimbo emphasized that the FRA 2007 mandates prudent management of national resources, ensuring long-term economic stability and greater accountability in fiscal operations.

Jimbo further reminded the House that Section 11(1)(b) of the Act requires the Federal Government to prepare and submit the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to the National Assembly no later than four months before the start of the new financial year.

The House resolved to “urge the Executive to comply with Section 11(1)(b) and submit the 2025 Budget Proposal to the National Assembly without further delays.”
