Nigerian Senate passes N2.17tn 2023 supplementary budget

The Nigerian Senate has approved the N2.17 trillion 2023 Supplementary Appropriation Bill, which was recently presented by President Bola Tinubu. The legislative milestone was achieved following the adoption of the report from the harmonized sessions of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and represents the APC Ogun West, submitted the crucial report.

This move comes in the wake of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration initially submitting an N2.1 trillion budget to the National Assembly, which had been approved by the Federal Executive Council earlier this week.

The supplementary budget encompasses several vital allocations, including N210 billion dedicated to Wage Awards for Civil Servants, N605 billion allocated to National Security and Defense, N300 billion set aside for the maintenance of bridges, with particular emphasis on the Eko bridge. Additionally, N400 billion has been allocated for cash transfers to vulnerable households, N200 billion for seed and agricultural inputs, and equipment, and N18 billion designated for the Independent National Electoral Commission to facilitate off-season elections.
