Many Nigerian footballers are around the world and a good number of them are not just making up the numbers, they are playing excellently consistently to the point of winning individual awards for themselves.
Nigerian striker, Ifedayo Olusegun, started his professional career with Rising Stars in Ondo State before going to Bahrain to make his mark abroad. He spent 6 years in the Asian country, scored consistently that his goal ratio was above 0.5 per game before going to Malaysia to play for Melaka.
He scored 8 goals in 9 games for Melaka, but left them for Al-Riffa where he scored 17 goals in 20 games. Ifedayo then joined Malaysian side Selangor FC in 2019, he scored 50 goals in 43 appearances and won the Golden Boot in the last two seasons.
In 2022, he rejoined Melaka from Selangor, their latest game was against Selangor, and Ifedayo scored the two goals that gave his new side victory. The first goal was a tap-in in the 39th minute and a counter-attack produced the second goal in the 57th minute which he finished with a low shot to the goalkeeper’s right, and he was the man of the match.
When Ifedayo scored the goals, on both occasions he raised his hands to the fans of Selangor and apologized to them, after which he religiously celebrated the goal. This is a sign of respect in football, and it goes a long way in maintaining a good relationship between a player and the fans of his former club.
After the game, Ifedayo still went to the fans of Selangor, raised his hands to apologize one more time and then bowed to them. He used to be a source of joy to them, but he caused them pain this time around. Ifedayo shared the video of himself scoring and refusing to celebrate, and many people hailed him, one person even called him the best striker in Malaysia always.
