A Boko Haram commander, Abu Shekau, has been reportedly killed during an attack on the Sabon Fagi community in Gujba Local Government Area (LGA) of Yobe State.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focusing on the Lake Chad region, the attack occurred on Friday when Boko Haram fighters launched an assault on the community.
In the ensuing gun battle, troops from the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with local vigilantes, successfully repelled the attack, killing four insurgents, including the commander, Abu Shekau. Some insurgents reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.
The troops also recovered several weapons from the insurgents following the confrontation. The publication’s report confirmed that the attack took place around 11:00 p.m. and that the Nigerian Army’s superior firepower forced the remaining insurgents to flee.
Abu Shekau, a prominent figure within Boko Haram and a staunch follower of the group’s late leader, Abubakar Shekau, was a significant figure in the terrorist group. He had named his son after the late leader as a sign of reverence for him.
