NIMC bans unauthorised NIN card printing, plans new official card

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a directive prohibiting registration agents and unauthorised entities from printing National Identity Number (NIN) cards in a bid to safeguard the integrity of the system and prevent fraudulent activities.

The commission raised concerns over the illegal printing of NIN cards by individuals, cybercafés, and organizations, who reportedly charge unsuspecting citizens exorbitant fees for these unauthorized cards.

NIMC clarified that it has not granted any individual or organization permission to print NIN cards as substitutes for the official General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC), stressing that such practices violate the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.

“The public is advised against printing or accepting these unauthorized NIN cards, as they are not recognized by NIMC and should not be used for identification purposes. Security agencies have been alerted to apprehend those involved in this illegal activity, with offenders facing legal consequences,” the commission stated.

NIMC reaffirmed that the NIN slip remains the only legally recognized identification document and must be verified when presented for access to services.

To address public demand, the commission announced plans to introduce an enhanced GMPC, which will function both as a physical identification card and a payment card. This upgraded card will be powered by AfriGO, a local payment platform.

Established under the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the commission is responsible for managing the National Identity Database, assigning NINs, and issuing GMPCs to citizens and residents.
