NiMet predicts fresh heatwaves, malaria, meningitis risks across Nigerian states

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning that Nigerians should prepare for fresh rounds of heat exhaustion and heatstroke throughout April, with central and northern states expected to be the most affected.

According to NiMet’s April weather outlook, residents in the south will also experience significant heat stress, while the extreme north is at risk of a meningitis outbreak due to favorable conditions for its spread. The agency also cautioned that states like Kwara, Kogi, and Benue face a higher risk of malaria due to increased mosquito activity.

NiMet further predicted that temperatures across the country will be warmer than average. The north is expected to record temperatures between 38°C and 42°C, while the central region will experience 36°C to 40°C. In the south, temperatures will range between 32°C and 36°C.

The agency emphasized that hot weather conditions will cause significant thermal discomfort nationwide, increasing the likelihood of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, especially in the central and northern regions.

NiMet urged Nigerians to take precautionary measures by staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and using mosquito nets and repellents to prevent health complications associated with extreme weather conditions.
