Nine killed in clash between Fulani, Hausawa in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed on Saturday that a communal clash in the state on Friday resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, with four others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

The incident, which occurred on Friday in the Miga Local Government Area, left several others hospitalized. According to an eyewitness, Bala Wadan, a resident of Gululu village, a stakeholders’ meeting was immediately convened. The meeting was attended by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, chairmen of the two local governments, district heads, Miyetti Allah leadership, and vigilance groups. The focus of the meeting was to maintain law and order while preventing violence, propaganda, and reprisal attacks.

Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the clash in a press statement, explaining that the incident took place between communities in the Jahun Local Government Area. He said that while a number of people were reported dead, some others are still receiving medical treatment.

Adam described the events leading up to the clash, stating, “On January 3, 2025, information from Gululu village in Miga LGA indicated that a group of suspected Fulani miscreants broke into a shop, stealing hibiscus and other provisions. A group of villagers (Hausawa) traced their tracks to a Fulani settlement camp in Yankunama village, Jahun LGA.”

“Upon seeing the villagers, the Fulani individuals opened fire on them with bows and arrows, critically injuring four. The villagers then mobilized, retaliating by attacking the Fulani and setting their houses on fire across Miga and Jahun LGAs.”

Adam added that, upon receiving the report, police teams from the Miga and Jahun Divisions were dispatched to assess the situation and restore peace. Unfortunately, he confirmed that nine bodies were recovered, and they were transported to Jahun and Miga hospitals, where they were officially declared dead.

The police spokesperson assured that the situation has been brought under control, and an investigation is underway to apprehend the perpetrators.
